Project
Two - Middle
Drilling has begun and continued for ten seconds |
| The crown is removed to show that the diamonds have turned the material into dust. |
It is now time to remove the drill guide. From this point on it is not required. The reason is because a channel has formed in which the drill bit can sit. You will see this further down. |
| Remove all tape and dust from the worktop. |
Pull off the silver tape. Wipe the area with a cloth |
| And revealed under the tape and dust is a perfect groove which has been countersunk into the worktop by the diamonds. It will now be possible for you to "sit" the diamond crown into this groove. If you drill slowly the walls which actually guide the drill bit and prevent drill wander or drill slip. |
Splash some water into the drilling area. This will help cool the drill bit and to absorb the dust. The material being cut here is Dupont Zodiaq Cloud White in quartz. |
| Insert the drill into the groove |
| You can continue to drill the hole. |
The water will wash into the side of the drill and begin to turn a milky colour (on all colours). If the water gets too opaque then its time to change it. Sponge off the water and replace with fresh. |
Try to hold the drill steady. You do not want to drill at an angle but there is some tolerance in these things so dont worry too much if the bore is not exactly perfect. |

| Most important at this stage is to be patient. The diamonds are only working a fraction of a millimeter at a time. You may feel there were more dramatic results at the start and the groove formed quickly. The same is still true at this stage but because the results are not visible it may seem that it is taking an eternity and you may think the drill is blunt or not working. It is working but 30mm is a lot of surface to drill away. Expect it to take 10 to 15mins. Stop and rest if you need to. |

Every now and then wipe away the residue and replace with fresh water. A splash from a bottle is enough. Please note the wine bottle in this photo contained water only and not Gallo wine. Which is a good time to remind you to be sensible when drilling. To use safety goggles. And dont drink (alcohol) and drill. |

At some point the core will "pop". Dont be tempted to rush to this stage. Continue to drill slowly. To add water. Do not speed up the drill or push on the core. to do so will blunt the drill and may damage the stone as the core pops. If you are pressing hard you might bash the counter top. Also look into the hole and you can see the bands where drilling was not perfect. Freehand drilling gives you this result. A fixed pillar drill would give a smooth tube. But its not important because it will never be seen. |

This is what the crown looks like at the end of drilling. It is wet with a milky mix of water and particles. It should not be hot, blue, dry or bent. As a rule of thumb if it took you 15 mins to get to this stage then thats about right. If its taking 30mins then the drill is blunt and should be swapped. |
